What to Pack for a Safari
Packing for a Tanzania safari is easier when you focus on comfort, practicality and changing weather conditions. Whether you are travelling for a few days or combining your safari with Zanzibar, bringing the right essentials will help you enjoy your journey comfortably.
Clothing
Choose lightweight, comfortable and breathable clothing in neutral or natural colours. Long-sleeved shirts and trousers are useful for protection from the sun and insects, while a warm layer is recommended for cool mornings and evenings.
A light rain jacket is also useful, particularly when travelling during the wetter months.
Comfortable Shoes
Bring comfortable walking shoes or lightweight hiking shoes for walking activities and general use around camps and lodges. Sandals can also be useful during relaxed evenings.
Sun Protection
The African sun can be strong, so pack sunglasses, a wide-brimmed hat and sunscreen. A reusable water bottle is also useful for staying hydrated during game drives.
Camera & Binoculars
A camera with extra memory and batteries or a power bank is recommended for capturing wildlife and landscapes. Binoculars can also make it easier to observe birds and animals from a distance.
Personal Essentials
Remember to bring your personal toiletries, prescription medicines, travel documents, travel insurance details and any other essential items you use regularly.
What About Luggage?
Soft-sided luggage or safari bags are generally more practical than large hard-shell suitcases, especially when travelling between camps and lodges or using smaller safari vehicles and domestic flights.
Packing for Zanzibar
If your Tanzania safari is combined with Zanzibar, you may also want to pack lightweight beachwear, sandals, swimwear and comfortable clothing for warm coastal weather.
